Hi Everyone,
I'm brand new here and I believe I may have a bit of a stumper for you all. I have a bit of experience with sharks, but I have never run into a shark that looked liked this. The owner of the LFS (shoutout to Living Sea in Park Ridge IL :)) said this was just a common cat shark. He couldn't give me a more specific name or a species. I think it looks more like a bamboo. I can't find him anywhere, but maybe I'm just looking in the wrong places. Please help me identify him!!!!!!

The body shape screams brown banded bamboo shark and I do believe I can see some banding in the tail in the first picture, but the fish is so dark in the pictures that it is hard to be certain.

Any chance we could get some better pictures where the shark is well lit?

I would guess a very dark bamboo shark. I haven't had a ton of experience with them, but my boss has a couple and this one certainly resembles them pretty close, besides the dark color. I agree with blacktip about the banding on the tail too.

I'm afraid that's about as good as the pictures get, but he does have some very dark stripes like a normal blackbanded bamboo would have. As far as lighting goes, this tank is pretty well-lit. He is just that dark. It's weird.

Brown banded bamboo that is on th edge of death. Darker than normal coloration is an indication of stress... and the body looks like it is either not being fed enough, or doesn't have enough space to swim properly.

Wow, does that suck!!:irked: I bought it a few days ago thinking it was a different type of bamboo I haven't seen before. It's already eating though. Maybe it's still got a chance. I can see the bands on the body. He should go back to the normal coloring if he recovers, right?

If he recovers, probably.
It's going to need a high calorie diet for awhile. Clam and salmon is what I'd suggest for several weeks.
