yup definitely female dempsey, i would wait till she is larger though because even if he accepts her right away her growth will almost stop once she spawns, so i would wait till she is like 5" or so and then try to put them together, should only take a couple months and it will be a lot better for her

that's what I was thinking of as well . . . now, is this something that is true of most cichlids? because my female convict stopped growing after spawning, and so did my female GT . . . is this generally the case?

You can always test the waters. My 5.5 jd accepted a 3" female after he chased her for an hour. If you do decide to put her in with him, make sure there are plenty of hiding places small enough that only she can get into.


^^ This is good advice, just make sure he doesn't go Mel Gibson on her. If he starts to, remove her and wait till she's a little bigger.

My male is considerably bigger than his mate, but she continues to grow even after spawning. She's about 2 inches smaller and always has been.
