I started and aquarium a few months ago with driftwood. I tied some java moss to the wood and early on saw some great growth. Then this blue/grey fuzz started to appear on the wood. Soon after it started showing up on the moss. Now I've removed almost all my all the moss in an effort to get rid of it. The moss left looks like is has this blueish spider web coating every strand. I do a 50% water change once a week. Yesterday I got an oto cat and some small snails, not sure what kind. They havn't made any kind of dent yet. From what I've researched there doesn't seem to be any one good answer, what do you all think?

Sounds like you have blue-green algae, one of the worst of them all. Could you post a picture so we can make sure?

Its probably just harmless fungus, not BG algae. It happens with almost all new driftwood (unless you boil the wood first) & it will go away on its own. Just save whatever moss you can & let it run its course. The bacteria in the tank will choke it out, so scrubbing it will only make it worse. Either boil it or leave it.
EDIT: Just saw the pics. Definitely fungus. Again, you can just leave it or boil the wood if its really bugging you that bad.
Thank you very much!!! I guess thats the lesser of two evils. I did boil the wood when I first brought it home from the lake. In the past I've always used african woods and never had a problem like this. I have noticed the growth has kind of leveled off so hopefully I should start seeing it disappear.

Well the growth has again worsened and its more hair like. Not sure its a fungus, what is the best way to treat blue/green algae. I've been trying different things to see if anything eats it. I found that red cherry shrimp go at it pretty good but I'm not sure they'll eliminate it. I started with two, now I have five so I'll see what happens now. Advice would be appreciated.
w.e that blue stuff is i got it too it starting to spread fast since my red tailed shark died im guessing he ate that stuff??
Weird... I just placed some driftwood into my tank the other week and had a mild bout of fungus. I've never seen it get that crazy before. The fungus on my driftwood was more fuzzy though, and less spider-webby.. Not much help but I'm curious too!
