HELP! King Kong Parrot is only red when light is off?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Black gravel and background will make the color deeper and white will make it lighter.

Bingo.

Your fish is simply adjusting his colors to match his environment.

How come all 5 of my kkp that was in the 300 gallon with blue back all of a certain turned pale after they have been in there for 2yrs+? They were all red with no change in diet.
After a day in my 40gallon breeder with no gravel, clear tank all around, they all turned red. Surely you cannot tell me its the background or the color gravel because there isn't any.

I have a pair of rose queen that changes color from red to pale and back to red in my 375 with black background and they have been in there for more then a year. They did the same thing in my blue background 300.

If they all suddenly turned pale after 2 yrs obviously it wasn't due to the color of the substrate or background. What exactly happened is impossible for me to say, but I would hazard a guess that it had something to do with the dynamics of the tank, as in possibly things changed as the fish became sexually mature. Removing them from their environment & placing them in to a new tank most likely caused the fish to begin reestablishing territory or hierarchy within the group, enhance the dramatic change in color. The same situation with your Rose Queens.

This is common with any type of cichlid, most have the ability to turn their color on & off, and depending on any number of factors such as stress, breeding, or environmental changes can result in a change of color in a fish.

You can read more about how color in a fish can be affected by different factors in the following link.

For some reason when the light is ON the King Kong parrot looks pale or has light orange color. In the morning when the light is OFF i could see he has a bright red or orange color to him, is the light stressing out the KKP? please help me Im trying to keep his color orange or red!
Well you should change your gravel to Caribsea Floramax plant gravel because it works for me. My king kong parrot turned royal red after i replace the fake estes gravel that i was using.

My observation with king kong parrots is that they love natural gravel and willing to promote vibrant colors as they are comfortable.

Its the light, check this out

Nirox brand light, 10000K

Same day, same fish, just different lights, no adjustment on the fish as soon as you turn on the lights, this is his color. In Manila, these are called "Pink" lights, I reckon 6000K
