Help me build a lid!

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
what are the dims? try looking for damaged acrylic tanks that are pretty large. you could easily strip the acrylic and cut it for your needs. thats the cheap way to do it

I think the best material for clarity, strength and weight is polycarbonate pannel. You can use weldon and weld acrylic hinges to it and handles to open it with. It can be purchased at your local plastic supplier, the same places you buy acrylic sheeting from. It is often used in building green houses.

This is what it looks like.

Awesome! I'm going to have to give that a try; I don't know of any plastic suppliers around here, but I'll see if I can't ferret some out. :)

That is kitty litter. This stuff is poor clarity due to the cellular structure, and it stains with light effecting the plasticizers that make the plastic soft. This leads to it becoming hard and yellow. You should definitely opt for good quality acrylic.

I don't know what stuff your thinking of but poly carbonate does not yellow or become brittle. It has the same optical clarity as acrylic and is what your highest end aquariums are made of. Bullet resistant glass is made of poly carbonate. I have seen se of this used at a hatchery with over 500 tanks and the stuff is over 5 years old and it looks as good as new.

riot shields as well. it's much stronger, cheaper and easier to work with, then acrylic as well.

Alright. Is it the stuff that was pictured above?

I mentioned before about using aluminum angle iron to help prevent the material from bowing. I found a pic of the lid. Yours is on a much larger scale ofcourse but should be able to do the job.

Hope this may help....
