Help me build/understand a basic sump, DIY overflow

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Thats basically what I'm doing. I just haven't decided if I want to go with a sump centered on bio filtration, or a refugium centered on growing plants and breeding food. Either one should be simple enough to start with. If/when I get a larger tank and can fit a 48" tank in it I'll probably try and do a combo and make it display worthy...have bio in a 1ft area on one side, hide heaters/equipment/pump etc in 1ft on the other side and leave the middle 2ft open for a refugium area. Hide the two sides with doors and leave the middle section of the stand open. It'd take some careful planning/engineering especially on the stand side, but its the EVENTUAL goal.

Right now I just want to hammer out the basic idea, whether I do it with a sump or with a refugium is fairly irrelevant, I just need to make up my mind on which one I want to play with right now. Considering the fact that I have 2 xp3's already in place which are easily handling the bio, I think the refugium is going to be the way to go as far as adding something useful to the tank.

We'll see.
