Help Me Care For This Baby Green Iguana!

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
The weather in Malaysia:

classic tropical climate with relative humidity levels usually around 90%. Weather is fairly hot and humid all year round (with the exception of the cooler climes of the central highlands) averaging 30ºC in the daytime, with short intense showers almost daily.

If I need to let it bask for 10-12 hours a day under sunlight, then I better get a Full Spectrum lighting as I am aware of the importance of UV rays for Iguanas. Thank you for the link Guppy!

I am not sure what sex is the Iguana, still a baby. A female will be aggressive? I hope he / she will be tame. I am waiting for the sun to come out at the moment, 8:38am...cloudy here..hmm. I have a UVA light for my Leopard Gecko, it is not a mix of UVA and UVB / Full Spectrum of course...hmm.

Edit: Since I am going to the vet, I will do my best to buy a Full Spectrum Lighting at a reptile petstore.

Buy the Ultimate Iguana Owners Manual by James Hatfield.

I ain't touchin' this, another abused iguana case.

UVB LIGHT IS THE MOST IMPORTANT!!! this is the light you need for 10-12 hours. i realize you take him outside but unless he's outside for 10 hrs day he will eventually get calcium deficiency.

UV bulbs output a tiny amount of UV compared to the sun. Just because you need the tube on for 10-12 hours a day for them to be beneficial, doesn't mean if you were only using natural sunlight as the UV source that you would need 10-12 hours exposure. The sun is a lot more concentrated and powerful, a few hours exposure is adequate if that is the route he is wanting to take.

Good luck with the Iggy.

Guess what, I found a perfect vet doctor who is a 26 years of experienced National Zoo doctor. He isn't focused on money but solely upon educating pet lovers. He taught me things and I have been following everyday, soaking and basking, vitamin, misting and supplementation of course.

To cut it short, you are right Paul, I provide sunlight everyday and I only provide for 30 minutes as the vet doc himself said is enough. The unshed skins have been coming off, but there are still many to go. And either I measured wrongly or the Iguana has grown quickly ( I am aware that they grow fast ), it measures like a foot now ( if some of the tail is not absent, it would be longer )

Pictures! I wish I could have provided before & after pictures, because this shows a lot of improvement. I am happy Iggy is doing well. Taken after soaking and basking:

Nice one. But tell me your not keeping it in an enclosure with water with a log to get out on..

Nah of course not, I will take a picture of the enclosure later. The water and bogwood were just for bathing and basking. I would let the Iggy soak for 20 minutes before I place the bogwood inside for it to climb on and bask for 30 minutes. Then back home and released in its enclosure.:)

Hey Sarco congrats on the rescue and in getting a good herp vet. Igs are not hard to keep but they do have specific needs i.e. heat, light ,temp gradiants in the encloser,humidity..As already stated the Green Iguana manuel by Jim Hatfield is the bible for iggy owners.
