Help Me Choose My First Cichla!

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Thanks Mike. Any recommended sources for Azuls?

I have 0 experience with cichla, so maybe I will stick with a couple of Orino's. (as you can see I am pretty open to suggestions and my mind changes with the wind).

Let me start looking at the vendors for orino's.

Alright then Orino's are for you! Almost all the vendors have Orino's when I check so they should have some "Reasonable" large ones for sale.

Do you guys recommend at least two, then? Or are you all just such cichla-holics that the idea of just one is a sin...

Exactly:D I recommend as many as you can get, thats how I do it:headbang2

Orinos right now range from 2-3 inches, and John has great quality ones and TUIC. I just got some this morning from John. Otherwise he has the ocells from 3-12 inches. And you can check the classifieds for more larger Cichla.;)

Honestly my rescue C. monoculus is the most aggressive eater out of all my Cichla. I have a soft spot for C. orinocensis (probably the reason I have so many of them) but out of all my fish C. orinocensis, C. kelberi, C. piquiti, C. "intermedia", and that rescue he is the only that will come out and bite the crap out of me when my hand hit the water. I'm not sure if it just because he is dumber than my WCs or what but he is very aggressive when it comes to food. I think you should look through pictures of others fish and decide for yourself what fish you want to get. It sad to see these fish sitting in an lfs 55 gallon at 12" because someone thought they would be cool until they figure out how much they eat and they haven't got any color because they are stressed and aren't of the right diet. However I do recommend more than a few.... I know I am a Cichlaholic but these fish thrive on competition and community. In the wild it isn't rare to see a shoal of 20 or more with fry.

Just out of curiosity how much experience do you have with Cichla payaraman? You seem to know everything about every species out there. Quite a feat for such a young buck.... I'm not doubting you because I was your age once and just as obsessed as you seem to be. Unfortunately back then we didn't have the internet so I spent my time in the library learning as much as I could.

I agree entirely, and of course in the end it will come down to what I find and like the most. I started this thread mostly to learn what other people are into and hear some recommendations from the pbass pros, and most of all to stoke myself up for my first one (or two or three). :headbang2
