Just looking through my old started threads and found this one - I ended up getting an '05 Volvo V-50 T5 AWD in late October. It has been nothing but a joy to drive. It's fantastic on gas, and have put about 10,000 miles on it since November.
Just in case anyone was wondering what I ended up getting!

I was just about to suggest the Kia Soul, 2012 models. I have a Soul+ and I absolutely love it! It looks awesome, drives very well, comfortable, affordable, great sound system, has a lot of standard options, safe (unfortunately from first hand experience, my first one was totaled @ 50mph), and I got 33 mpg on the highway last time I drove it on the interstate. Cannot recommend this car enough.

Hi,
The Kia Soul was on my list - but it was not all-wheel drive, and I needed a little more room in the back. My Volvo gets the same mpg as yours - I'm surprised you are not getting better mpg.
Thank god it's a safe car - glad you were okay.

Mine has the 2.0 litre engine, so it suffers a bit for the extra power. I wish there was an AWD model of the Soul, it's perfect for that drivetrain. It would be a perfect field research car that way. It's still building up the mpg, I was getting lower when I first got it. I've heard reports of owners getting 40 mpg with theirs! I do wish the trunk area was slightly larger, but once the seats fold down..... that doesn't matter. I'm so happy I didn't have the collision in my old car. Those have a tendency to not to deploy the airbags.

The Volvo is going to last a long time, though. I was looking at the S40 wagons, but they're so much more expensive!

There's no S40 wagon. I think you mean the V40, which is the "wagon style" S40. The V50 replaced this car.
The V50 T5 has a 2.5 turbocharged engine, and was very pleased with the 33-35 mpg seeing that it's an AWD. If I drive really slow on the highway (50-55) it hits 42 mpg! It's crazy. (Automatic.)

Yeah, that's it! That's insane mileage!!! Normally AWD vehicles such the gas up a lot more rapidly, but wow! How does it perform in gravel, snow, and mud?
