OK, well thanks for the cycling advice, I appreciate it, but... back to my original question: how can I better manage the pleco 'deposits' and the fact that my tank is cloudy? is the tank cloudy from bacterial bloom, or is it probably still the suspended dust?

Like I said, my large water changes have been mostly to get rid of the cloudy water. I know that I need ammonia to make it cycle... and I guess I'm being influenced by bio-spira success stories here, but I thought the general consensus was that it worked to cycle tanks rapidly (?)

NEW TANK SYNDROME ;) YES a bacteria bloom.

I know its VERY hard to do, but just leave it alone and your water will clear up and cycle on its own in a few weeks. It just takes time.

Your large water changes are only making it worse and will just make the cloudy water last longer.

The cloudy water is the bacterial bloom dont do water changes dont worry about the pleco poop let your tank cycle then do a 25% wc with gravel clean and reduce the amount of food you are feeding your pleco and you will be well on your way.The water changes your doing are only hurting you in the form of removing the bacteria you need the pleco poop is helping feed the bacteria.Bio spira is ok but a tank that size needs time to cycle chil out go on vacation and check your water when you return.

i bought a 75gal on the 18th and set it up with just my pleco 8.5" to help cycle it,i also added a product to jumpstart bacteria growth so i
now have the "bloom" . i figured it should be clear by now right? yesterday i bought a magnum hanging filter with the micron paper type filter to help clear it up. i have added some more fish i plan on keeping
(except for the danios) will they speed up the cycle or is it too much to soon?

75gal
fluval 405
1xjack dempsey 4"
1xfiremouth 2"
5xgiant danios 3"
2xplecos 8.5" and 6"
1x bala shark 2"

Just a little advice on the filter sock. The human eye cant detect anything in the water less than 150 microns. So your 100 micron filter should pickup anything going through it that the human eye can see. Just some useless information there for ya :)

Really?? I don't know about that. I bet you're right that the human eye can't resolve anything smaller than 150 microns, but if you add billions of particles, they will be enough to scatter the light, and cause your water to look cloudy.

Well that's good to know... anything less than 100 seems to plug up FAST in my setup :p
