Help me decide which Gravel Vac, please!

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Since you asked about the 2, I will stay with them, I would not use the one with a pump and valve regulator at the end, first off the regulator will get clogged and the pump will get dirt and stuff inside of it and have to be taken apart and cleaned after each use. That is why I think less is better when cleaning gravel, less to have to clean up when done.

I have a few squeeze bulb-type gravel vacs. They are very handy for small tanks. Mine are Biorb brand from PetsMart; they are larger than the one you linked to appears to be. I have never had to take the bulb apart; there is a screen on the bell end that prevents large debris from ebtering, and the whole thing can be cleaned in seconds in the sink.

unfortunately, I am extremely limited in money. I will get a bigger tank and when I do i will get the python. However, right now I just need something to scoup out the water. I have cichlids (convicts.. yeah nothing too special XD) I still treat the water.. so I lug the bucket as it is. This would just make it a tad easier in getting the water out. But like I said I need a temp fix. Eventually I could make one ymself but for the cost I'd rather get a python. But like I said later on. Ok.. I'm guesing from first glance.. the one without the pump ball? Aka.. lees?

The trouble with that model is you have to shake the end up and down in the water to get the siphon started- this is fine in a big tank but can be a hassle in a small tank. Do you have a PetsMart nearby? Like I said, the Biorb siphons work well and are bigger than the pump model you linked to.

You can get a python at walmart for around 12 dollars nowadays.

Get the first one you posted, but the biggest model. Those ones have a wider outlet tube than some others so they flow a good bit faster.

If you don't mind carrying buckets, then either one will be fine. But to make life easier, go with a python or one that attaches to your sink.

Some of us have crappy tap water that needs to be aged/treated before a WC, so consider yourself lucky to be able to use ONLY a Python...

Python all the way.
