So I would like to add more bio capacity to my 125 gallon African tank (11 fish total ranging in size from 2-7") Currently I have a Penn Plax Cascade 1000 which has one bio media tray, and an HOT Magnum 250 (no bio). I have a 10 gallon tank laying around and I'm going to pick up a 40 Gal breeder and a 40 tall tank tonight for 50 bucks! I'm not looking for anything elaborate but want it nice looking. This will be my first DIY project, and I'll document it from start to finish. I'll need to build an overflow (tank is not drilled) need suggestions on a pump to return the water, and advice on the best bio media. I really don't know where to start and have been googling crap for 3 days now and still don't know how I want to proceed. So bounce some ideas off me and lets get this project rolling! Thanks in advance!

there are a TON of wet/dry threads in this section. I would recommend reading them, they will answer most if not all of your questions...

I made a wet/dry my self and I thought that I could never do it but with the other threads and the help of a few members I did it...

I am just waiting for the fittings to arrive (i had to order them online) then I can start putting my overflows and return together...

PVC size at 1" is good... as for pump that all depends on what you want...

the most popular are the Quite One and the Danner Mag drive...

You do not have to drill your tank. I would advise a custom build wet dry wilter to fit above your tank. I do not know what your tank is like on top or how mutch space you have above, but I will draw up a plan for a wet dry filter and see if I can scan it on and put it as a paint document. You should be able to have a nice wet dry filter custom made by a custom tank compampany. Because the main wet dry tower is just sprayed with water, it is not always that heavy. it is the sump that has most of the weight. But if you have a unit made to rest ion top of your tank, if you can, then it wont weigh as much as the water can cascade strait down into the tank and you will not need a sump. If you want a good overflow box, it will probabley cost you several hundrad at least. For that price you could get a good above tank trickle tower made. You should also particle filter the input to the tower, you could use a cupple of external canisters, or internal filters to supply it.

I wasn't planning on drilling the tank, and it's in my living room so it has to be nice looking so the sump is definately going under the tank in the stand. I'm going to build an overflow from PVC like the one I linked to.

instead of using a 10gal tank why not try making one out of rubbermaid bins that fit in your stand... that is what I did.
