Father in law has this fish in his tank and he does not know what it is. He says shark of some sort but I honestly have no idea. The fish is in a tall 55 and thus the tank is too sall for the fish. I would like to figure out what it is so I can look up some details on it before I try to take it off his hands and throw it in with my oscars.

So help me out all...

Looks like an Iridescent Shark to me. Not really a shark at all btw, google it and you will get tons of info.

Thanks. After seeing the pics online that is it exactly. Now to try to convince my father in law to give it up as his tank is too small for it. It is already a solid 6 inches long. Hck even my 125 wil be too small for it but it will let me take it on till I upgrade again.

It's more like a catfish than a shark an believe me when I say there good at breaking tank glass because they spook soo easy. Make sure you have them in a nice thick sturdy tank or you'll end up mopping water up at 4 in the morning like I did when I had mine in a 55. Google the name and goodluck. Very interesting species. -norm

Looks like its already stunted, ID sharks have a blue "iridescent" line on them, and lose it as they grow...he should be atleast a foot long if hes lost the color

I had one that crashed into the tank all the time. He would get scared and just thrash into the glass. I love them though.

FIL has had him for perhaps 2 weeks and even if he was stunted at the LFS he is still too small for that tank. He smashes his face into the glass of the tank as well since that's what they do and because he needs more room.

They smash into the glass because of the poor eye sight and are trying to flee what they believe is danger. You need to approach slowly...and either raise them with other ID sharks, or other fish for him to school with.

Secondly yes he does need a bigger "tank" more like a pond but yeah.
