Yes they can reach 39 inches! Not a very good aquarium fish imo. They spook easily even in schools. Ever see a large one that isn't all banged up? Maybe at the Toledo Zoo or some big public Aquarium but they definately aren't for the average hobbyist. Tell your realative to get a red tailed shark prettier and will not get soo dang big.
