I'm trying for the black rat snake.Corns are a little too skittish, and childrens pythons are too small,as said above. So how big of a enviroment for these guys?I hear they like to climb.

haha youll want a corn first every black rat ive had is vile.. granted the little teeth barely draw blood but trying to pull them off your hand evry time you touch them gets old.... plus corn morphs are cheap and most elaphe are easy to breed and otherwise maintain..... ball pythons suck hands down picky eaters hunger strikes, and every tom dick and or harry has one. if you have the change for a childrens go buy a really nice corn.:headbang2

every tom dick and harry has corns in the tank next to the ball pythons.

I would get a corn if I were you they are a nice size unlike the childrens and they are even tempered unlike the ratsnake. And there are some really nice variation for them and not that bad of a price.

Get a retic lol

That snake would not be out of the question if it was a super dwarf. Althow I would recommend the owner have a few years experience with a different python first.

yes alot of ppl have them but corns and balls are great.Ive had almost all the most popular snakes and after years of breeding other herps and keeping diferent more exotic ones,I bought a freaking corn last year and love it.I even want a ball python again but really love the bloods.Anyways,if in the back of your mind you really want something a bit more challenging then you may want to think it over longer and get something a little higher up the experience rope but do your research and dont forget the balls and corns are great snakes.Dont do it if you think your just wanting to get your feet wet and then get rid of it and move up.What are you truely wanting?Do you need to hold it all the time? How much room are you willing to give it?

To the OP:

How much space do you have to devote to this new pet? Are you wanting something you can sit in your lap while you watch TV? or do you want a fast, active snake is more likely to be seen crawling around its cage? Is money a factor?

As said before, most of the snakes already mentioned all make excellent starters. Aside from the factors I mentioned above, you just gotta go with what appeals to you. These kind of threads, you always gonna get a dozen different answers. At that point, its just a matter of which snake looks the coolest to you.

im with "rare afishinado" go with a ball python. perfect beginner snake. oh and not to thread jack but rare afishinado got pics of said balls? lol sounds a tad dirty...
