Help me ID these Gars....

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Okay here are the new pics I've got for ya's. The first pic is the one I think is the Florida, the second I am not too sure about, and the third picture is the 2 kinda side by side. Oh, and they just had some guppies/rosies reds.

They both look like Florida's to me. Good pics, btw. Florida gars (all gars, actually) seem to show a lot of color variability. The two Florida's I have are very different. One is a very bright silver base with very very dark brown, almost black spots on it. This one has always been very dark over pure silver scales. The other has more of a tannish silver base, with a light to medium brown spotting over it. It also seems to have some very light brown or yellow from the tip of the caudal tail up through the caudal peduncle, whereas the other doesn't have any of this yellow coloration to it at all.

Thank you for the pic compliment, they didn't really want their picture taken, and a flash against glass usually doesn't turn out so well either. So what size tank should I have for 2 full grown florida gars? I've read they grow to about a foot and a half, but you guys are the experts.

A 125g (6x1.5x2) will last you quite a few years. A 180 (6x2x2) will last you even longer. Most Florida's probably won't outgrow a 180, but if they do, then you will have PLENTY of time to get a larger tank for the by that time.

given they are likely from the same batch, i would say they are most likely Florida gars. the first one is definitely a Florida gar, but the second one, given the pic presented, could very well be a shortnose. would be odd to see one at this time in the year, but anything is possible these days. if you can get a few more pics of the second one, including a dorsal shot if possible, we could get you a more solid ID.--

Nice gars. Love the gars. I've got a Florida that looks just like those. Just moved him from my grow out tank. Bad boy grew from about 5 inches to 10 or 12 inches in less than a month or so.
