help me id this L27

I wouldn't recommend the belly pattern as a reliable indicator for differentiating between these two species. If you remove colour (which will give you an idea) their patterns are quite variable and overlap with each other.

Between Panaque nigrolineatus (L190) and Panaque cf. armbrusteri 'xingu' (L027 xingu) the most reliable way to differentiate them is their mouth and teeth layout. Panaque nigrolineatus have a tighter V shape teeth layout and 7-9 per jaw, Panaque cf. armbrusteri 'xingu' have a wider V shape teeth layout and many more teeth per jaw (which becomes more apparent with larger sizes).

Do you have any pictures of these fish? It's just that descriptions differ from what I would say. And from my experience, Xingu are the most commonly seen and those from the Tapajos are most sought after.
 
Hmmm... Give me a day or two to take pics of their mouth and teeth. Thats very interesting, lot of interesting things to learn from you guys.. Please drop by the thread again matt to tell me what you think. Oh yeah there just might be a problem the smaller panaque is a tad smaller though bout 4.5 inches dunno if you can see from that size. Thanks!

I think these are all opinion unless there is stats. Either way for pleco lovers, these are all very nice plecos

You can see pictures of L27 xingus on my vendor page, I just sold 5 of them as a group. I have sold many L190s they are distinctly different in base color besides the teeth pattern and very common. L27s no matter which variety are rarely seen.

I am also privy to stock lists from Brazilian exporters, many carry all 3 types of L27. The most expensive of the 3 is the Tocantins. The Tapajos and Xingu are in my opinion the best looking ones.
 
In my opinion the most rare of all the "Thunder" Golden line very few seen in the hobby due to its collection point, availability and ID.
I also like the "Xingu" type but mostly in big sizes, small are also good looking. CLICK On the picture.
