So I posted a question on P-fury, and now there is some debate over the species of my fish. I have posted ID threads on several other websites and I am waiting to see what the common consensus is and I hope Frank from OPEFE will weigh in on the ID at some point. I figured there were enough piranha folks on here that I would post a thread up here too. So let me know what you think he is.

The last time I did this I got everything from Rhom to RBP, and we all concluded it was a marginatus as it had been sold to me. Some folks on the other forum are convinced it's a compressus. You tell me:

ok. Specimen is approximately 5.5 inches in length. Sold to me as a marginatus. Collection point is unknown. I thought I had finally concluded he was a marginatus based on a comparison of these two pics:

2. Marginatus from OPEFE

I know he's missing the anal fin extensions, but it was my understanding that those came with time and good fishkeeping. I've had him for about three months. When he came to me his color was all bleached out, and his fins were tattered. He's just starting to recover. He was in a 20L with nothing to hide behind, and the lights were kept on most of the day. I added aquarium salt, and a varied diet and he's looking better. I hope these pics are sufficient to put this debate to rest for good. While we're at it, if it was possible to sex him I would like that too. I appreciate all informed opinions, if you give your opinion I would appreciate a rationale behind it. Thanks for the help.

Nice sanchezi

doesn't sanchezi have more red on the belly?

don't think it's a rhom, at 5.5" the eyes should start to turn red if they are not already turned.

I think the closest one is still probably Marginatus. However, aside from the extension on the anal fin, the top of the dorsal fin doesn't look as sharp as the the pic from OPEFE and the pigments seem to be larger than the one from OPEFE.

I guess only time will tell. Regardless what it turn outs to be it's one great looking specimen.

It does look kind of like a sanchezi...
I'm certainly not an expert though.
