either way he needs food

he eats plenty. Serras don't get as thick as pygos. "Pirambeba" means flat fish, and if he is a Serrasalmus compressus, they are named compressus because they are so laterally compressed like a discus or an angelfish. He eats fine. They just look different from RBPs and other pygos.

I called my LFS and they said he was shipped from Brazil, and most likely collected in Brazil, but they couldn't be more specific than that.

If you can get a straight on flank shot we can tell for sure. If you see any vertical lines along its belly then its a comp. If not probably a sanch. No way its a marg.

hastatus (Frank Magallanes from www.OPEFE.com) weighed in:

The photos are not sufficient to determine the species. I think my guess (and its a poor one) is that it might be S. marginatus. Let the fish grow out more and revisit in a few months. By then, if it is S. compressus or S. marginatus, it will be more evident.

I honestly disagree with Frank on this one if he thinks it looks like a marg..Only time will tell though...good luck with your p

yeah well honestly i don't care what species it is. I would like to know because it's just in my nature to know things like what species my favorite fish is, but I like him all the same no matter what the second scientific name is. I think he's pretty and I can't wait to see what he looks like grown up. I think I'm gonna take a good close up of his scutes just to get an idea, and possibly rule out sanchezi. I am 90% sure it's either Compressus or marg, but like you said only time will tell.

I think you can definitely rule out sanchezi. In the first pic and another picture you can definitely see the belly scutes are neat and orderly and not like a sanchezi that looks random.

yeah I was thinking the same thing, the color of life is different as well. As far as I can tell its in the compressus group, most likely marg, comp, or altuvei. He looks more like an altuvei but they are confined to venezuela, and he was collected in Brazil.

other than a marg I mean. To me he looks just like the fish in that pic minus the extensions on the anal fin. Whether or not that fish us a marg remains to be seen.
