Convict's are much cooler. Get another convict, get a Sajica, Carpintis would be cool. Or a couple of those "Deppi" that are going around -- those look sick.

Or a buch a Regani. Take forever to grow up, but when they do, they look awesome.

I originally stocked the 75 with a firemouth, convict, and what i thought was the severum. With realizing that the severum is actually a convict i moved the firemouth to a 40 gallon (he turned out to be far to docile for the convicts and just hid) and picked up a texas to go in with now the 2 covicts. I actually went to the lfs this evening as i had seen some beautiful texas cichlids there this morning. Everyone seems to be happy for now and if the texas gets to aggressive i have other tanks to move the convicts to. I have basically replaced what i thought would be a severum wet pet with a texas wet pet. I guess it all worked out in the end..

I think to truly get the most out of a firemouth it must be housed with several other firemouth. They're social fish.

How many would you reccomend, i would be limited to a 40 gallon. He is very shy right now 2.5 to 3 inches long would he start to be more active with more around?

Yeah a 40 is kind of limiting. Is it a 40 breeder? Stanzzzz7 Stanzzzz7 has a lot of good knowledge on Thoricthys in general.

No its a bowfront (even more limiting i know), i believe its 32 inches long by 12 at the edges, 15ish at the middle

Too be honest I think you need to re think your stock for both tanks.
If you like firemouths,I would advise you move on your current stock in the 75 and put the firemouth back in there and add 5 more, and some livebearers.
Keep the 40 gallon for smaller fish like tetras and dwarf cichlids like cribs or Bolivian rams.

If you start putting fish like convicts, texas cichlids or veija in the 75 expect to have problems with aggression and beaten up bullied fish.
Those type of fish need tanks in the 180 gallon and over bracket.

I currently have the texas in with the convict that was pictured above and another smaller convict. I think i will move the smaller convict (who is the most mild mannered of my convicts) to the 40 bowfront along with the firemouth. I currently have a pair of convicts in the bowfront that will be headed for a 20 long that I just got cycled. So that leaves me with a 75 housing a rowdy texas and rowdy convict, a 40 bowfront with a mild mannered firemouth and mild convict, and a 20 long with a breeding pair of convicts. The question i guess is if i can get any more firemouth for the bowfront as was suggested... any thoughts on these arrangments?

I would rather not have several smaller fish. I was hoping for a wet pet type of setup for the 75, my wife has a seperate 75 with many small community fish. Thats not my interest. I prefer to have the texas as a wet pet. If he has to be alone im ok with that. Is it due to the firemouth that i need to rethink my stock?

You could do the texas alone in the 75g, might be able to get away with the convict in there too. I'd let them grow up together and keep an eye on them. As far as the firemouth, you could do a pair of them in the 40 gallon, but Its not enough room in my opinion to do a shoal of them. I'd recommend moving the convict if you get a pair of firemouths, they will probably want the whole tank to themselves.
