Help me make a decision on a canister filter please?

I'm thinking i'll go with the 305. I have one on a 30. But if i regulate it somehow i can get away with it.

Question:

Tell me, does regulating the flow OUT of the unit harm the impeller or motor in any way???

The pumps in canister filters are not pressure pumps so restricting flow will not harm the impeller or other pump components.

Whoa.. LOL I use a Ehiem 2115 on my 50 gallon tank. I love it. Long lasting too since I've had this thing since the year 2000. Get that. It won't disappoint.

i am and have been a committed Fluval user for many years.. so naturally my suggestion is going to be for the Fluval 205 or 305 for a 20 gallon tank. IF it's ever going to be upgraded to something larger, i would spend the extra few $$ and go with the 305.

Well, a 2215 would be fine for most people, but I know Redear likes to overfilter.

I am not sure how well the MAgnum 350 stands up to the other canister mentioned, but I have nevered used anything but the Magnum canister and they are money. I have had one for 20years now and I have only had to change the magnet once, that's it, and no leaks what so ever. Especially when it comes to Mechnial filtration, and polishing the water. But again I have no experience with the others..

I went with the RENA Filstar XP1 - it seem to have some decent flow. Bought it tonight.

unless you're going fx5 the capacity is really sad for the fluval filter sizes, i'd take the eheim any day
