The purpose of this article is to discuss swim bladder problem (commonly known as SBP).
From my own experiences (2 cases) and understanding, SBP is caused by one or combination of below:
· Overfeeding (e.g. excessive superworms to young arowana in hoping to pump it like Shawn Ray).
· Young or small arowana swimming in excessive tank e.g. five feet tank.
· Excessive powerful pump at side of tank (though no scientific proof).
· Sudden change in environment.
· Transporting arowana from one place to another.
· Struggling arowana during netting process.
SBP is caused by air bubble or blockage of duct in an arowana. Sorry for the layman explanation but as far as I am concerned – something is blocked inside.
So if you encounter such a problem – how?
Solution:
· Detect SBP as early as possible, as SBP for too long is not hopeful for recovery
· Use concentrated blackwater or throw many ketapang leaves. Do not be concerned that blackwater or ketapang leaves become excessive. I have not encountered a case where arowana dies of excessive blackwater/ ketapang leaves.
· Keep the height of water level 1.5 or at most twice the height of an arowana. This is to encourage the fish to swim as straight as possible.
· Avoid strong pump at side as it is not going to help and may cause more stress to the poor arowana.
· Use Epsom salt (2-3 teaspoons every 3 days with slight water change). Observe the behavior of arowana every now and then. But I can tell you that there is no point observing every half hour as it is not going to be a miracle.
· You need patience in treating SBP.
· You need luck. Some SBP can be treated, some cannot. Depends on severity.
· Even if you solve it, do not be too happy as problem may recur again.
· Lastly prevention is better than cure.
With this, I hope your arowana experience will be a more pleasant one.
