Get 3 RBP's. Upgrade in the near future only if you see that space is limited for all 3.

i'd say you are FINE with a single rbp. let us know what you choose to do and post pics :)

well I wasn't trying to dissuade you from getting an RBP, I assume you will do whatever you feel like doing, but if that list of characteristics is important to you, you're gonna get bored with a 55g with one shy, skittish fish hiding in the corner all day. Just know what your getting into before you buy the fish.

I know because there are days when I think about getting rid of my serra because he spends a lot of time hiding (and when he's not hiding he's patrolling, banging glass, etc. something a lot of P's don't do), and you can't put anything in there with him other than food because he kills it, then goes back into hiding. Despite that they're really cool, and completely different from other predatory fish like cichlids. Get an RBP, if you don't like it you can always get rid of it I guess.

What is the retail value/average price of RBP's?

depends on the size, and availability in your area. In my area (washington, dc and environs) they usually go for about 12.00$ for a quarter sized fish or 2 for 20$. RBP's in the 4-6" range are around 50$. Monsters (12+) are like a bill i think...

if you're set on pygos, and you have any access to other pygos I'd say get a solo caribe. I just like em better but they're gonna be like twice as expensive at least i think.

oh yeah and check the legality in your area. P's are illegal in some states.

Cool. I will search caribes some more, as well as read more deeply into the laws to be sure...

You could get 3 reds IMO, or a solo caribe.

3 Reds will get to 6-7" in less than a year, but it will take much more time for them to grow the full 12". I think they'd be fine in there for some time. You may be able to pick up 3 small reds for the same price as a caribe depending on location.

Cool, I will try that.

I will have to shop/look around first.
