That is one seriously stunning catfish. shame a fish with such great markings only comes out under darkness. Its on the Maybe pile

I like the ornate pims aswell, im not sure about the long wiskers on pictus (how fussy am i!) but its still a contender.

its past 3am in the uk so im not fully awake and able to make lucid desitions

btw Quick of subject question, if you turned all the lights in the room off and lit the tank with a dull red glow would nocturnal catfish come out asif it were dark? i no alot of animal cant sence the red spectrum, it works well with alot of mammals (shine a dull white/yellow light on a rat he runs, shine a red ligh on him he doesnt notice)

I wouldnt mind getting a strictly nocturnal catfish so much if something like that would work.

Bullheads do look cool.
(in the uk we have a species called the bullhead but its a small river fish)

I cant find out if its an illigal species in the uk, could be hard to track down even if its not.

we're along the exact right lines now tho (altho i did like the synos i may get some for another aquarium.)

Yeah, what you guys call a bullhead is a member of the sculpin family. very neat fish, can be difficult to keep (need cold well oxygenated water).

Spotted, snail, yellow or flat bullheads. They meet all your requirements. The yellow grows a bit larger then 10".

I had a black bullhead that was around 11". It was one of my favorite fish. I had it with my flowerhorns before they paired up. I moved him to a 75 after they paired up, but there was another male flowerhorn (12") in that tank and the FH attacked the cat. The cat turned sideways and covered the FH's mouth with his own and brought the pain to the FH. I had to sell him because one of the fish was going to kill the other and I had run out of tanks, and I didn't want to find out who would win. I also tried moving him temporarily to a 20L until I could get a bigger tank, but he jumped out while I was asleep. He was dry to the touch, but still wiggled, so I put him back in the tank and was fine a couple of days later.

Im starting to decide now, In order of preference

Jaguar Catfish (perfect size, preditor, beutiful. Basically perfect)
Giant bumble bee catfish (could be hard to track down)
Walking catfish (cheap, easy to get, normal max out inbetween 14-16" in aquarium, abit bigger than i wanted but acceptible, ugly compairered to the previous 2)

Bullheads are cool but not avalable i think in the uk.

PICTUS CATS!!

6 bucks tops and mine never rests, not even in the day

Just so you know, Synos aren't predatory AT ALL. They're really cool, but they're one of the most docile cats out there. Mine get along with everything in the tank perfectly.

walking cats are legal in the uk and they get huge i have a 16" one in my pond and its aggressive and competes with the rtc for food.
you can mix them with cichlids to big to be eaten and attacked but they wont share the tank with other cats as they will kill them. I do know of a source of bullheads but i think you may need a license to keep them im not sure as they might fall under the exotic coldwater fish thing defra brought in.

Pictus are great and really active but no small fish.

pim ornatus is nice but cost 25 quid plus

synodontis are cool but not predators
jaguar catfish are a good bet..
