Help me pick my next ray?

I don't know what the retic's died of. I think the male might have had internal parasites, since he never really put on weight like I though he should. The female, I don't know. She seemed to be very healthy and eating well. I had the male for 2 weeks and the female for about 6 weeks. :(

No rays will be going back into the tank that the 2 retic's died in. that tank will just remain as my Amazon biotope with what it has in it.

The tank they'll be going in is a new 125g tank, with nothing else in it. I will start with bare-bottom initially, and might eventually add substrate if i get sick of bare-bottom. It's drilled with overflows, and will have a 30g sump.

I really like marble motoro's, but don't know if I can get one for that cheap. I could go for a pair of motoro's, or maybe a motoro and something else once I save up more cash. I like the castexi, and also the 11" male yepezi in buy sell, but it wouldn't fit in a 125g tank very well, right?

If I go with motoro's, how many could I keep in the 125g tank for 1-1.5 years? There's a buy/sell with cb motoro's in chicago, but you have to buy 3 or more to get shipping...

How many hystrix?

How many marble motoro?

Imo i would not put a ray in a 125 u may get away with two small motoros for a year in 125 but it needs good filters and lots off water changes i would not buy a ray untill ju have the 300 gal up and running .

The main thing is you will need to over filter the 125. The tank is 18" wide so you could house 2 rays up to 10 inches in diameter maybe a touch bigger before upgrade. You would definetly have to run a 40-55 gallon sump with 6-10 times the turn over to keep the water stable. Are you adding a sump cause I noticed you said the tank was already drilled?

I have a 30g tank that I plan on using as a sump. I haven't put in the dividers for media and return pump yet, so I could get a larger tank for a sump if I needed to. I plan on running two Quiet One 4000 pumps which pump 1017gph each. At about 5 feet of head, they will combine for about 1400gph total (this is the exact same setup on my current 125g tank). That's 11x turnover rate per hour on the tank, which should be more than enough. The 30g sump ought to hold enough media to filter the tank for 2 rays, I think, especially with that flow rate. Like I said, I can probably get a 55g instead if it's considered absolutely necessary. I'll have 2x 300w heaters in the sump.

Whatever rays I get shouldn't be in the tank more than 12 months at most, as I plan on buying or building a 300g tank within that time frame. As long as I get smaller rays (younger), they should do fine in it with just a pair in that time, right?

Should be fine, it is not so much the space as it is the filtration. You stick a 18" ray in a 18" wide tank you will have problems but a 10" ray will do fine. The biggest thing with smaller tanks is the unstable water. If you add a sump and a lot of bio media the water will have a better chance to stay stable.

I see fishdog is semi local to you, he has a nice castexi and you won't have to pay 60+ in shipping like you'd have to if you bought mine of someone elses that isn't local.. I always look local before i have to ship.. Just my .02 worth..
