Im looking at getting a canister filter for my 90. Can anyone recommend one for me. Good quality, quiet and inexpensive is what im after. My livingroom sounds like Niagara Falls and its becoming intolerable.:irked:

What's your price range and what are you keeping: fresh vs salt, how stocked is it or will it be and what kind of fish?

If your looking for quiet and energy efficient I'd go with an Eheim which one depends on the above factors. They will cost more than most similar filters.

If it's more an issue of initial outlay Fluvals are cheaper slightly more noisy, slightly more power hungry but still very nice canisters filters. The x04 series are easier to service than similar size Eheims. Again the model will depend on factors above.

ah sorry, should have been more clear.

-its freshwater
-no stock in there yet but it'll probably be an oscar and 7 clown loaches
-I dont really want to spend more then $150 CDN

Foster smith has Eheim Classics rated for 90 for that range ($150 CDN ~ $126 US). However this one does not have media baskets so maintaining it becomes a real chore. You could look online for older Fluvals, X04 have been discontinued for the X05 so you can find a 404 which would suite your needs for that price. I'd stay away from 403 as they had a tempermental seal I had to massage to eliminate leaks.

What's your filtration right now?

Right now I have an emperor 400, but I dont think it'll handle the bio load a year or more down the road when the Oscar gets bigger. That and its noisy as hell.:irked:

EDIT: Well whether or not its capable of filtering the tank effectively the main reason I want to get rid of it is the noise factor. Its not even enjoyable to be in the same room and im not the only one living in my house.

By itself no heh But with a good canister makes an awesome combo. Where is it making all the noise? Water level low?

Maybe some modding can help with the noise.

Its not the filter itself making the noise but the waterfall effect. Actually I never even considered a combo. Might be a good idea. I suppose maybe attaching a piece of plastic or something so that the water flows down rather then falling into the tank?
Well played sir, I think I'll do a combo. :headbang2

If that's the issue just keep you water level high and the noise will go away. Then you can go with a smaller canister filter.
