If by gator trout you mean speckled, I don't think it would work. They are saltwater fish. They can tolerate very low salt but they do need salinity to some degree. I also think you mean bowfin, not bow fish.

I have seen many dead tankmates that would disagree with you. Count yourself lucky you haven't yet had issues.
Yeah, as this is my first Predator tank I would prefer to play it safe (well, as safe as I'm going to get).
Been reading that bichir will go after the barracuda after lights go out as they see their skittish behavior as something they would like to bite into. Would this be the case for the bichir that only grow rather large or is there smaller bichir that this could work?

idk but all my bichir liked a good hunt/chase imo you would be okay with bichir that are on the smaller side to start that learn not to eat tank-mates... ie grow everyone up together. But the problem w/ predatory fish... they just don't comm well as a general rule. You never know what your going to loss... I'de pick a "main fish" and try and build around what won't predate it but it's "Ok" if by some chance it predates something else in the tank and work that way.. ime I've lost very few fish to tank-mates this way. obviosely choosing tank mates that are "least likely" to be predated by the "main fish".
Yeah that's why I have chosen yellow tail barracuda as the fish I want to build around, . Since they do best in groups planning on getting three of them. Along with the Clown Knife those are the two I'm set on and just want to lightly fill in from there.
