ok i have 2 tanks, 150 gallon with 2 GT's and 2 jacks. and i have a 55 gallon with 2 jewels. i want to turn the 55 into an african tank. what do you guys think i should add to the 55? all input is appreciated.

its usually best to decide if you want to go local or mail order fish, once you decide find the one that you really like and build around it.

These are both valid points. But in my opinion i would go along the lines of a Tanganyikan tank. Add a small group of rock dwellers, such as calvus, comps, brichardi...A group of sand or shell dwellers, ocellatus, callochromis...Then some open water fish, such as cyprochromis. Lots of collor, lots of breeding, lots of fun!!!

Hope that helps,

What kind of Callochromis do you keep? Pretty rough, no?

Im not sure the specific variant but i think they are Callochromis pleurospilus but i am not sure. What do you mean by pretty rough?

Thanks everyone. I will look into the ones that have been pointed out after this post. Also my wife wants purple fish. I seen some kind of purple fish at a local fish store, but i cant remember the name. does anyone know of nice purple african cichlids that they would recommend?

Rough as in beating the snot out of each other. I brought back some small pleurospilus (1.5") from the ACA this year and had them in a 20 long to grow them out a bit before going into a 4' tank. Not sure if it was them not traveling well or aggression, but I now only have two of the seven I started with. :(
