Careful with discus if you aren't prepared to do a lot of water changes and if you water is too hard, don't expect them to breed successfully. Also, if you are growing them out from juvenile size, always go bare bottom, it'll help ensure that you keep things clean for them so that they grow correctly. Discus are more easily stunted/deformed than a lot of other fish, IMO, if you aren't staying on top of everything.

Have you considered a group of thorichthys?
They are more colourful than a lot of geos in my opinion, they won't grow as big and you could keep colourful easy to breed livebearers with them.
I used to keep thorichthys helleri with wild swordtails in a 4 foot tank.It was one of my favorite set ups with plenty of breeding and interesting behaviour.

No I haven't thought about it.
Are they peaceful?
How many can I have if I decided to go that route?
I dislike livebearers

They are peaceful in groups. You get the odd squabble but nothing serious. If you had a group of about 8 you should be fine, any less than 6 and they can become more aggressive.

You could keep them with robust tetra such as b a tetras if you don't like livebearers.
