I think sumps are good for adding the extra water volume. Now as far as price wise, just my 2 cents, they are only cost affective if its for a big tank or already have the materials around. Then only major down side is that if you are building your overflow then it can be kinda loud. But for me it actually helps me sleep, white noise.

Loud? I don't even hear mine. All I hear is the hum of the pump and that will go away when I finish enclosing my stand. My overflow is quieter than my ACs were.

A sump is better than most canisters IMHO. I would do a sump over a canister any day. You can have great mechanical and bio filtering all in one and you can put your heater in it so its not in the main tank. The way I build mine they are much easier to maintenance than a canister filter as well.
A 20 tall seems a bit small for a 125 sump (but can work). A 55 would be a great sump for that tank. If you build and set it up correctly there will be not problem if your power goes out or if your siphon brakes.

the best thing about sumps is how they filter the surface of your water so you dont develop skim at the top well that and the amount of water volume they move leaves your tank looking crystal clear:thumbsup: you can do a 20 gallon sump in a 125 as added filtration as long as you watch your overflow placement for backup or power outages but if your going to want just the sump for filtration i would go with the 55 gallon just to ensure safty and have more media

yea I have not put a cap on the vent pipe yet. well I did but forgot to put the whole. but i like to noise helps me hear that its working right.

Ive been going over this in my head at work today trying to mentally put the parts i need together. Im beginning to agree with the fact it may be unnecessary considering i'm already running a 1000 gallon pond filter and a magnum 350 under my 220. (By the way i'm running a 220 not a 125. I'll have to check and see if I miswrote that on the first page.) But either way i'm pretty well filtered, I think i'm just itching for a new fish tank project. I'll probably do it later just for fun. My main concern now is the bookshelf 55. I'm calling in the boys this weekend to stand on the shelf in hopes that it can ease my fears. Say a prayer for me, the basement is my hideout, and I have no plans to submerge it. I really appreciate all of your opinions and ideas, this is a great website with some smart folks, I wouldn't feel right if I didn't consult you guys before I took anything on. The one question I guess I have left is what filtering I should use when I find the time to tackle the sump project. I'm thinking a foam level, charcoal level and a bio ball level. The only thing I haven't figured out is how to build a custom container for the charcoal. And while I'm on the subject of charcoal is it possible to buy charcoal in bulk at a home depot or something? Is the charcoal sold for aquarium use uniquely created for just that purpose? Anyone know? Thanks again everybody, have a few for me this weekend.

I actually already have enough filters for the 55 too. I beginning to think I may be going filter crazy, why else would I be so interested in putting a sump where it isn't needed. I'm sure one of the tanks will get my frankensump one day soon. I'm all about fixing things that aren't broken when it comes to my tanks. I'm going to look into that charcoal thing too, im thinking it may just come down to how well it's rinsed.
