Help me reseal this tank please

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Well if you already successfully sealed a 75g, then you already know the process.

Yes, that whole internal filtration unit has to come out. Its not worth it to try and piece together a new seal to the old ime, especially with a tank that size.

Ive never tried waterproof tape, but i do find myself in agreement that it would look ghetto as fuq.

Thats a gorgeous tank with a ton of potential. If its me, i would disassemble the entire thing and rebuild it just for fun using a quality structural silicone like rtv108 or scs1200. I would trash the internal unit and drill the back panel for a sump. I would do way more work than is necessary to get it running lol.

One thing that jumps out at me concerning the leaks is the why of it all. If you do reseal the tank in its current configuration, whos to say it will not spring leaks in the same places? Is that a metal brace around the top? Aluminum? You may need to augment that frame with some glass eurobracing between the glass panels to properly support those angular seams.

Best of luck with the overhaul, whatever you end up doing, and keep us posted how it turns out.
I would do the same thing. Lot of work and worth it imo. I would definitely scrap the existing filtration. 👍 tape for a 5min G.A.F. fix. 😂

I have 2 canister filters that I had planned on running on a 125. If the internal filtration has to come out I don’t think I want to reinstall. Plus having filtration and the ability to run at a lower level would be beneficial as it’s open top. I wonder if I will have issues with the height of the tank working with canisters. The top of the rim is 36” from the ground. All instances of running canisters have been in the 50” range. Either way. Thank you very much! A case of GE type 1 will be in my hands by the weekend.

That tank is way nice and has way too much potential to give up without putting a good effort into it. I'd say goodbye to that whole filter mess that's in there now, go with the complete re-seal (not disassembly). That's a lot of seams to re-do, and they've all got to be done in one sitting, no taking a break halfway and then continuing tomorrow allowed. So, have all I's dotted and T's crossed, and make sure everything is gathered and ready before you start.

That tape idea suggested by Gpdriftwood Gpdriftwood sounds fascinating. Does that require using some silicone or other sealant where tape overlaps tape in the corners, to make sure there isn't some tiny crevice or channel between the strips?

I hope you try the tape idea...at least partially because I am anxious to follow along and see how it goes. :) Good luck!

I like the sound of that! There is no visible seals to the filter box though I assume they siliconed in a few spots and stuck it on. Thank you for spending sometime thinking on how you would handle it. I will start disassembling and cleaning it tonight. Hopefully be ready to water test again next weekend! I will keep this updated on how it goes!

before I used ge type 1 for the 75. Is this still a decent option? Or a better choice for this job?

Hmmm sounds like an interesting project. Mind snapping a detail pic of the filter box and posting it?

Ge type 1 will work just fine. I believe its still the blue label tube but just make sure its the silicone 1 cause theyve been changing up their labels lately it seems.

I recently bought a dozen tubes of GE 1 and it came in the same white/translucent/grey tubes it's been in for awhile now, at least up here in Canuckistan. Getting harder to find, I like to stock up when I see some in case I wake up with a burning desire to make an aquarium. :)

Looking at all the seams in that tank shape...is that a multihedraltetraquadrazoid?...I think the acetic acid fumes will be pretty thick for awhile. :)

Just a very quick fix, that will last years, if u want a super reliable ghetto fix. I would scape and redo all the interior silicone if it was something I bought however. Sweet tank btw. Some wanna do the work, some don't. I have done both many times. Always better to do it all the way properly the first time imo nowadays. Have made it a couple of decades now on temporary MacGyver fixes though as well. Still learning everyday.

I agree the sump is the best. But layout of room, other aquariums, and size of room and stand leaves no room for a sump. I plan on running other aquariums on each side of this tank and will have 15” of space behind it to run a canister or 2. Or I run the internal and piggy back a canister to run extra filtration? I dunno. Haven’t had a tank bigger than 75 before and have all been tiny fish.
