Help me seal my tank

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
well i don't plan on abondaning it, i am trying to seal it with an epoxy resin, i will do a coupke more coats, if that doesn't wrk then i will take all the silicone off and clean it all up and see if i can reseal it with silicone hopefully this time it will work and everything will be all good all i will have to do after that is build my canopy (i've got my filters, sump, and heaters all sorted out already)

sounds like a plan....post some pictures of this monster in the making.

i will try to get some tomorrow

If your going to do it you might as well do it right. Band-aid fixes dont usually last for long and can wreak havoc especially when dealing with 400+ gallons of H2O. Im assuming the glass for this tank is pretty thick and heavy. Have you considered replacing the metal bottom with a glass one? If the adjoining side panels dont have flat edges Id take the tank apart and take the sides to a professional glass shop to have them ground flat. Once the edges are completely flat you will be able to produce a much better watertight seal.

This isn't the easiest fix but then again the right way is usually the harder of the two.

I don't have to money to buy a piece of glass that large, the edges are all flat i just am not sure if they are perfectly straight, which they probably are, the steel probably isn't straight. what i am doing right now is sealing it with epoxy resin, if that doesn't work i will take it all off and try silicone again, and if that doesn't work maybe go for 2 plywood tanks, but from what i here you aren't suppose to make them that large, i would have to make mine 8 feet by 4 feet and about 2foot 2 to be able to get it thru the door. but the 8 by 4 has to be that big because that is how big the glass is.

why dont you make a wood bottom? some guy on rc made a huge tank with glass and a wood bottom.

i do have a sheet of 3/4 exterior plywood here, but what would i have to put on the steel bottom to put the plywood on and not have to worry about anything, the steel cannot be takin out as it is the top of the stand as well as bottom of te tank. The steel has been coated in an epoxy resin, so maybe just stryrofoam or sumthing then the plywood
