If you are buying a small one around an inch or 2 a 55 gallon would be fine!! It isnt going to grow HUGE overnight!!! I would recommend just getting a 90 gallon though but it all depends on how much money you have bigger is always better!!! I mean why get a 125 if you can afford a 150 taller is better also with cichlids!! Just my opinion !!! 90 gallon is perfect for one or two Oscars to grow out!!!!!

This, in red only, is the sort of thinking that gets people into trouble, they always go in with the best intentions. People always say that they will upgrade but unless they can see the future they do not know what sort of problems might stop that upgrade and then before they know it they have a 10" oscar they need to rehome and because they are a penny a dozen no one will take it.
Fish tanks don't jump in huge price increments, it might be an extra months wait that is all; time you save the extra. I've never understood why people spend all that money on a 55g only for it to be a stepping stone to something like a 5ft tank when they could have waited a little longer and got the tank they wanted in the first place. It ends up wasting hundreds unless you can re-use the growouts which most people don't, they just sell it for pennies on craigslist or aquarist classifieds.
In huge tanks it makes sense to confine juveniles because they might never find the food or expend so much energy getting to it but for the size that the majority of hobbiests have it is unneccessary.

Back on point.
If you have the cash then a 90g is 4" extra height, same footprint as a 75g 48x18" but a few more gallons that will help you accomodate a couple of smaller plecos without punishing you so much on the maintenance.

i always liked oscars but never got them they just seem so big to me i know they start of fry but all you ever hear is "my oscars massive " i like growing fish meself any way good luck .

I would love to get a 90, but they are hard to find around here :-( I honestly don't think I have ever seen on posted on craigslist or for sale in the local pet stores. The ones that you can find are like $300+ because they come with stands, where as I can get the 75's for $75 and build a stand for about $100. Since a 75 and a 90 have the same footprint, if I do come across a single 90, I could always change them out and have a happy-er Oscar.
