help me settle a debate

i have little tono nitrate in any of my tanks. we dont recycle the city water here, its straight from the aquafer plus i do regular weekly waterchanges

For whatever it's worth, this has nothing to do with the ammonia/nitrogen cycle going on in the tank. Nitrate is the result of aerobic bacteria breaking down fish waste (ammonia). If you have a zero reading with a heavily stocked tank (especially a new one), something isn't right.

Zoo diver is right. You need to test for nitrate in the tank (not using dip strips or old tests) BEFORE your weekly water change, there should be some nitrate present or the tank is not cycled. The water change will dilute the nitrate.

I would get the fx5 before adding the rays as 40 gal (of which 20 gals used for media if I understand correctly) is just not enough for rays. Good luck.

ok, i use the api test, 10 drops of each bottle into the tube, mix and wait method i test the lowest possible range on the color strip. i guess i'll get one of the fx5s before getting the rays.

youl be fine ,

are you running any sort of chemical filteration?? carbon ,ammonia remover/zeolite?? ect
