Can I safely assume, tolerate any situation means as little water change as possible? Lol

Get a betta
Or perhaps try a sorority since the tank is a good size. Java fern would be nice and cheap and would eventually cover the whole tank.
 
I believe this tank, is too small for any fish that exceed 3" (it is only about 30 gallons).
So to me species like FMs that average 6" or more, or even most adult Amatitlania (5+ ")get too large for it.
Maybe, Amatitlania nanoluteus.

A pair of regani dwarf pike cichlid, and some kind of schooling fish as dithers. I have one that seems to be quite hardy at the moment.
