Oscars are South American and there are a few wild-caught variations that will knock your socks off. Stay away from Petco and many other chain stores. Their Oscars are so inbred their faces are crooked! If you get a good Oscar, you get more than a fish. You get a pet who is happy to see you and beg for food. They might not be sparkly and elegant, but man can they own a heart!
Try to find one with a conical nose instead of a roundish face. The round face can be a sign of inbreeding. When it gets really bad, their foreheads disappear. Pointy usually means smart. Just my personal observation, I doubt it's documented anywhere.
