Hello I have been doing my homework on selecting a filter setup for my new 240 gallon freshwater tank. I was first going to use a fluval fx5. Then I was told its always better to "double up" your filter for more water movement. Im pretty sure that two fx5's would be super overkill for my tank. So I was considering "doubleing up" a few smaller canister filters. I have looked at the rena xp3, xp4, and maybe the cascade 1200. The reviews of the xps and xp4 seem to be about 50/50. 50 say its great and 50 say its junk. I would like to stay around $200-$300 for my filter set up. Could you please give me some advise on making a good decestion. Easy maintence and efficiency is what i am after and of course healthy, crystal clear water.
Thanks in advance

I have two fx5s's and one 205 on my 180G. So i don't think there is such a thing as overkill. I run the two fx5's at either end and the 205 in the middle. Creates enough current, and keeps my aquarium clean. I run bio rings in all of them, amonia remover in the two fx's and carbon currently, but i think im going to change to purigen. My 205 is more of a polisher, with really fine wool.

One tip from me regarding the fx5 is: if you have messy fish like i do, i find it needs rinsing more regularly than other filters. Purely because it turns over such a large amount of water per hour. So it seems to fill up at an alarming rate. I alternate my fx5s and rinse each of the bi-weekly, so i rinse one of them one week and then the other the next.

I run an fx5 on my 240 as well as an undergravel with three power heads and tank stays clear and clean, I also do a quarter water change once a month

that sounds like good advice I might start doing that myself I just aquired a stock of oscars and I hear tell they are messy fish

i would run the fx5 then just add circulation pumps if you're still worried about water movement.
