ok so i come home after a few days to my bass looking like this... what is it? how can i treat it??

Whoa! have you checked ur pH?

Sometimes that happens when the pH drops and the water gets too acidic.

the tempature has been steady at about 70 and my magic PH thing i am getting the replacement for it tomarow. along with a large water change. i have hooked up a heater and added salt to ti

has not affected any of his tankmates.
a yellow perch and a rock bass.

The Trust, what do you think of the heater idea? Personally I think that is the last thing he needs Heat has a way of stressing natives/coldwater fish.

To be honest I think the heater is fine but since it's only natives in there now I told him to remove it. if it had tropicals then that's a different story. I really think it has something to do with the pH. I've had catfish and CA cichlids with the same symptoms before when the pH dropped. Some fish are unaffected and some fish have their slime coat just melt away.
