I have not been trying to starve my eel. I do know that in the wild eels more often eat large amounts of food at once and then go a short while without any food. I was planning on feeding him large amounts of food every other day and then maybe a small portion the next day.

I also did not want my eel to eat himself to death like some other fish will do. Do eels do this or should I just feed him until he stops?

And yes, I plan on giving him shrimp soon. And are supermarket fish cut up more nutritious than feeder fish?

We wont hold your ignorance to propper feeding against you, as at least you where smart enough to ask for help. But please next time do alot more research ahead of time as they are living creatures, ask around here if you want to know more we tend to be helpful. But in this case take theCanucks advice he has one of the nicest/healthiest captive eels I have seen in a long time so he knows what hes doing. Also try to feed you eel either whole or only beheaded fish, like leave their guts in as they have alot of good nutrients in them.

But you shouldn't have a problem with him eating to much, they aren't as dumb as goldfish.

You should only feed your eel saltwater fish, freash water feeders and brakish feeders like reds and gold fish and mollies have way to high a fat content for marine diets. This excess fat is known to shorten a saltwater preds life significantly by causing a disease reffered to as "fatty liver disease" it essentialy destroys their livers. AS someone else said its like junk food, once and a wile is fine, but all the time would be like only eating junk food and everyone knows thats not good for you haha.

I wouldn't feed him strictly salt as G. Tile is a primarily brackish fish. They start out in FW, move to brackish, spawn in fresh and then it is debated if they do or do not live the rest of their lives in saltwater.

I wasn't worried so much about him over eating, as jumping out of the tank for food or killing and eating my other fish (he killed and stripped one of my dragon gobies to the bone before).

He was on a diet of smelt, shrimp and the occasional feeder rosy but then my salinity dropped down by .006 and he went on a hunger strike. He is still refusing to eat, but now he is coming out more and looking a bit better so I am hopeful he will start eating again.

As for the research, uncommon fish are very rarely accurately documented. I quickly research care of fish that I plan on buying first and if I would be able to provide what they need I get them and learn more as I go along. I have read that a rosy/goldie a day is enough. Only experience could have showed me that he would eat however many I put in. Even though I wasn't a G. Tile expert when I bought it, I knew that I could learn more and provide adequate care with small changes.
