I don't know about the 50% thing, when I had a ray.....I did 50% every three days in one big change for over a year... with an 18" endli in there and other crazy's, and no problems.....unless you count them growing super fast as a problem....
bichirs like aged water.....but the changing never seemed to cause any of them any stress, if anything, they would just get really hungry after the change...
