A few days ago I aquired a little bitty arrowana for $15. The guy who works there knows me fairly well by now, and I asked if it would be alright to put him in with my motoro stingray. The ray keeps to himself, and the aro seemed pretty quick so I thought I'd try it.
The first 48 hours went good, he had all the live blackworms he'd ever dreamed of, a new 55 gal home. If i could read his teeny brain I'd say he was contented.
Last night i noticed he was holding his tail fin funny, letting it droop when he stopped swimming. But i didn't really examine it closely until this morning when i saw a hunk of his tail fin was missing. He refused food. I quarentined him in a 10 gal, got him freshwater salt to help the healing, and things haven't progressed. He is breathing, but he is now hanging out on the bottom of the tank. He stays very still until the water current disrupts him and he is forced to do a half-hearted swim around the tank. He still won't eat.
I feel so awful! What else can i do for him? I've heard aro's are pros at healing themselves, but is this little guy too far gone? Is his "still-ness" just the result of something being broken or is he staring down the grim reaper's scithe? I can't think of anything else i can do for him.

Need PIX to determine.......sounds like he's just scarred and a little traumatized.Should be fine, but....Pix.

when i got up this morning, the last half of him was bent and blackened in the middle, and he was comletely on his side. not too long after his eyes clouded over and he ceased breathing all together. i feel bad, but i'm never taking the chance of hoping two predators so far apart in size will get along. i didnt want to take a pic after he was dead, but heres him in better days. Sorry for your loss.. An aro at that size is so fragile I wouldn't even keep mollies with them for fear of them picking on him... Seriously.

Yup, they are still a BABY at that stage....Sorry for the loss:cry: at least you didnt have the little dude long enough to get attached to it. I would start with a new aro and keep him in a grow out tank, they do grow fast. I have one from egg sack and had him for about 5-6 months.....he is now about 7-8 inches.;)

yeah, i'm in the process of looking for another baby/young one. they're priced more moderately, but i guess its because they've got to be watched so much more carefully. and thanks for the condolences! :(
