I have a 44 gallon hex tank that has african electric yellows and a red zebra cichlid. The tank seal broke and it is losing water. I have a 75 that I just filled this morning that I could place them it. I also have a 55 gallon that has been running for a year. In the 55 there is 6 tiger barbs, 2 6" bala sharks, 4 black skirt tetras, a 6" tire track eel, 2 silver dollars. how would the cichlids do in that tank for a few days? there is plenty of rocks and driftwood for them to hid in. Please let me know what I should do. I don't want my cichlids to die. And the 75 gallon tank is bare bones except for a filter and heater. Which tank would you switch them to? 55 stocked or the 75 just filled this morning tank?

Depending on how big the mbuna are they may be fine in the 55 temporarily, or put a divider in if there is a problem.

The 75 will be fine too, just switch over everything you can from the established tank that broke.

I would use the filter and substrated that is seeded from the 44 in the 75 gallon and put the cichlids in there. They should be fine as long as you don't shock them.

Edit- You guys are quick!

just transfer filters+ 10% old water to 75- no gravel bs, dirty gravel just raises ammonia

That dirty "BS" gravel contains more BB than you think.:) The 10% of old water does nothing but add ammonia. Here is an example of what happens when someone goes bare bottom quickly and doesn't allow the filter to build up enough to take the full load

Also what is he going to do with gravel when he repairs his tank? Let it dry out?

Well all is well so far. I did transfer the filter from the 44 to the 75 along with a new aqua tec 55-75 filter. I then added a xp3 as well. The cichlids seem to be doing well so far. I fed them lightly and they all excepted food so I am assuming that is a good sign. As far as the other tank goes, has anyone ever resealed a tank before? Also should I just reseal the leaky seal or should I reseal the whole tank? It is a glass hex tank so there are many seals. I guess after the mess I had to clean up today I would just be worried about this tank leaking again. Thanks again for all of everyones help.

reseal the entire tank, I had a 15gal hex and one seal busted and I re-did, then another one went, etc. Its probably better to re-seal the entire thing. It doesnt always stick right either when you re-seal over a seal. Pretty much get a razor and take off the old seal, clean out the tank with a rag get all the crap out of the tank, then buy silicone (make sure its aquarium safe) and re-seal the tank. =]
