hello and thank you for taking time to read this.. i recently bought a jardini arowana and paid 200 for it cause i can never ever ever find them close to my house anyways i bought her and put her in a 55 gallon all by herself for now until shes big enough to move into a 180 gallon and my water conditions are ok and everything but when i bought her the fins were a tiny bit frayed and i figured it was stress from the move and ive been treating her with melafix antibacterial and i just noticed a small red open sore on her cheeck on her gill im going to attach a photo but anyone please tell me how to treat this ive searched for months to find a jardini and as soon as i got one i do not want her to die im already soooooo attached to her so please help me and my fish and im sorry for the picture quality shes not used to me yet and that was the best picture i got out of 50 cause she wouldnt stop moving and i also just noticed she has the same type of red mark on her fin in the same side as the red spot on her gill ill re attach the same photo so please even guess as to what could be wrong and how i can help her make it through :/

Without a clear picture it's pretty hard to diagnose.

i know i keep trying to snap a picture but shes still so timid that when i walk to the tank she turns and swims away and the red dot is only on 1 side of her not all over but from the pic i posted above its just a red circle that looks like a burn its deffinatly an open wound of some sort but idk what it could be ive been treating with melafix and her fins are already healing up very very nicely and this dot isnt as red as when i first brought her home but its not closing at all and it looks like she has a few tiny bumps on her fin the same side as the wound on her gill but its not an open wound yet its just looks red and irritated with the few bumps so im at a complete loss cause im trying to make this as stress free as possible for her so her immune system is alright but i need a pic so im really lost on what to do at this point :(

You are doing right by adding melafix---just don't over medicate. Jardini are tough fish for sure. If your jar is swimming well and constantly on the move then it should be ok. To help you further I need to know what the temp is on your tank and if the jar is housed alone. I would add some aquarium salt and bump the temp up a little.

Keep us posted,

my temp is currently at 81 and she is being houses in a 55 gallon tank alone with aeration a whisper 20 and a fluval 60 i believe its the one that came with the tank until i can get a canister filter and i have plenty of artifical plants and some large driftwood in there for her to feel protected i habe her on a frozen krill diet with some arowana sticks that i put inside the krill once they defrost im going to attempt another picture of the injury/wound/whatever it is lol i only bought her cause i wanted her to have a chance and a good home with the condition she was in :/ and also this is my 4th day of the melafix and im following the directions on the bottle 1 tsp for every 10 gallons so ive meen mearuing 5 1/2 tsp and adding them everyday shortly after feeding and like i had mentioned the frayed fins she had are already healed up nicely and the red spot isnt as red anymore but its still noticable.. should i do a big water change after the melafix cause ive never had a fish like this that i had to treat before

I think you are over medicating.. I would do a 50% water change and don't add any more melafix. Add a little aquarium salt and bump the temp to 84 degrees. In my experience over medicating an arowana is worse than doing nothing at all. As long as your jar is swimming freely and is feeding, relax a little..Some wounds take time to heal.

Keep me posted,

Ok I'm gonna do the water change right now but just curious should I remove her from the aquarium and bag her up before I do any more vacuming to reduce stress on her? I mean is there any good thing to feed her or to do to boost her immune system up to help her fight off infection cause that's my biggest fear at this point is the wound getting infected

Oo and 1 last thing if I add aquarium salt hot much should I add for a 55 gallon and isn't it that if I add aquarium salt then I need to do a 100% water change after? And seeing as how she's not at 100% should I go to kroger and add purified water for my fill water during the water change?

Leave your jar in the tank. He/she will be fine. Make sure you use dechlorinator and tap water will be fine for your wc. Use aquarium salt at 1/2 dose for your tank. No need to do a water change after you have added aquarium salt(defeats the purpose of adding it). Aquarium salt gives the fish more slime coat to cover the wound and kills bacteria in the water that causes infection. Then just do your weekly water changes as scheduled. Try to get a better pic and we can help you further..

Do 25% water change, make sure the new water added is treated with chlorine and heavy metal toxi remover. New water needs to be exact temperture as water in tank and with oxygen bubbles in the water for few hours before changing. After adding new water bump up the heater up to 85 degrees and add aquarium salt. Make sure the salts dissolve slow by adding into a cup with poke holes on lid for slow dissolving. Do not feed the jardini for 24hrs. Wait for atleast 2 days for healing process. Good Luck with your fish
