Help! My Malawi's are going mad!

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I'd say upgrade to a 55, do not use any plants and use lots of rocks ( enough so each fish has at least two spots to hide), add more fish ( I recommend acei's and electric yellows for beginners) and do water changes every three days or as necessary. I have a VERY overstocked 55 African tank. I started with only a few and have just kept adding more and the aggression has gone completely away. They even huddle together at night.

Best of luck, and the I.D's above are correct to my knowledge.

DEFINITELY upgrade to at least a 55 gallon tank... Seventeen gallons is not even semi acceptable... I'd take your fish back and trade them in for slightly less aggressive fish... That stock list is killer... a 55 could have a lot of Africans and they'll live very nicely with each other.

1) kennyi hybrid male
2)chipokae male
3) red zebra, possibly RZ hybrid
in the background i see a yellow lab... his he #5 that got killed first?
4) another kennyi hybrlid male, probably the first one's brother...

personally, i'd get rid of 1, 2, and 4 and look into getting purebreds that arent so hyperaggressive. in other words, avoid the mixed african tank at the pet store!!!

good luck!

My Chipokae is the meanest fish only second to my Midas, he about killed one of my red zebras and my tank is safely overstocked. He is relentless with everyone in the tank. You need LOTS of hiding places. And yes 65l is about 17-18 gallons, WAY too small for those guys. So more space and more hiding areas is my op.

My Chipokae got his ass handed to him by my 6 inch Acei and now he never attacks anyone. Even though he is like double the size of most of his tank mates.

My 6 inch Acei dominates my tank. My fuebelloni ( I can never spell that) is second in command.

Wow that's crazy. My acei are so passive they are bullied by everything in the tank, even though they are the largest mbuna I have.

I am sorry, i was not quoting the species right. It's my Greshakei thats is the VP to the Crabro. Not the Chipokae. Funny how some species rule the roost in some tanks and are the passive ones in others. The heirarchy going on with my lucky 13 is very interesting to watch. Mbuna are THE most entertaining fish for sure.
