I have (3) LM Bass , (2) Channel Cats a Common Pleco & (2) Yellow Perches in a 30 gallon tank. They are ALL 3 inches small. (Im getting my shipment of a 75 gallon tank today).

I woke up this morning and say them all darting across the tank and scraping themselves against the gravel and then I saw my beautiful channel cat had white spots all over the place (Ich).

I bought the treatment at my pet shop which says to put 1 pouder pack per 10 gallons, so I put 3 since I have a 30 gallon tank. Now the color of the water changed to greenish blue. I also installed a heater and began raising the temperture from 72 degrees and I am aiming towards 82-85?

I also purchased a big bottle of Aquarium salt. My question is should I add some salt now, while the medicine is in the tank? or wait?

Shall I suspend feeding until they get better?

Can I continue giving the Pleco his algae wafers?

After 4-6 days of medicine treatment shall I do a 25% water change?

I am probably sure that there are many different previous threads already covering this topic and may be repedative , I do apologize, but I need advice from "Native fish owners" not tropical or salt water fish owners.

Thank you very much for all assistance.

Add an airstone, treat with the salt, follow the meds directions on the packet as to length of time before water change, and keep feeding them as normal. Just remember that treating with salt at lower than at least 86F means you need to use the salt for a longer time period, instead of 10 days go for 14-20.

I wouldn't even personally bother with salt if you're already dosing with malachite green, but it won't necessarily hurt anything. I dunno how well your catfish will do though since malachite green at full dose can kill scaleless fish.

If you are only prepared to upgrade to a 75, I would euthanize all of those fish now. A 75 will only hold them for a few months. If you are prepared to provide them with a 240 long or larger within 8 months you will be okay.

Clove oil will do the trick.

I am not sure what happened...I just got home and the temp. was 82 degrees. I found a dead channel cat, and all the rest of the LM Bass and Yellow Perch with a white cloudy mucus all OVER their bodies like as if some sort of infection hit them to the point where its almost covering up their whole bodies. On second thought one yellow perch is probably on the brink of death now. I dont understand what went wrong........... I dont know what to do now to save the rest of them...I feel helpless....

I followed the instructions and emptied 1 pack of Ich medication per gallon. Now I have dead fish???

May be nothing that you can do. We all lose fish. It happens. My suggestion next time is to be realistic. You cannot house those fish in a 30 without daily water changes, and you cannot expect a 75 to hold them long. They died. You learned. You will do something different next time.

I feel horrible now because they wer doing fine until I decided to do a water change, which to me seems ironic.....I dont do a water change and everything is fine and dandy, I do a 75 % water change and Ich flares up and now I have dead fish?????

What did I do wrong???

I understand that I needed a bigger tank to house them. But why did my Channel Cat die after putting the Ich medication ? If it is harmful to them why didnt they tell me this at the Pet shop? Was their an alternative medication in the even you have channel cats?

I mean everyone critizes the fact that I have a small tank. But what I need to know is what went wrong biologically? Why did they fall ill to Ich? Why did this happen after a 75 % water change using the python? I removed the filter pad from the filter so that the medication could work. Why did this white mucus stuff that looks like dead skin develop all over their bodies in the matter of hours?

What are the preventions to Ich and these kinds of outbreaks?

For all its worth I understand that I housed to many in one small tank , but they are all 3 inches small. It is relatively insignificant for now, in the long run yeah it would have sucked for the fish, but how did their small size contribute to their death?

Many questions before any good answers can be dished out. In most cases you never really know what goes wrong. If you can post everything you do......we might be able some obvious issue but not all fish deaths can be predicted.

Many medications for ich will kill scaleless fish. Catfish, Loaches, and eels to name a few.

Also, juvenile fish are more prone to die from injuries, akin to how weak a human baby or child is when it gets sick. Healty adult fish have a better healing rate if you catch the illness in time.

30 gallons is only good for a grow out for a couple months. 75 is also pretty much a grow out tank for a much larger 8' tank. Even with an 8' tank a channel cat will be cramped when it starts pushing 18" and getting a nice catfish belly. If you are only going to get a 75 then you need to stay away from the channel cats.

I am not sure what to do now with the 3 surviving bass and the one channel cat?

Do I suspend treatment altogether?

I did a 40 percent water change last night and it seems to have relieved a lot of stress from the fish.

Do I resume treatment at half dosage? and should I not raise up the temp this time and let it be at room temp?
