HELP!!!! My Oscars have turned on each other

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I have seen breeding in my African tank, just not oscas, I have about 50 yellow lab fry from my africans and the behavior looks slightly similar to what my oscat are doing, but way more intense, I'm not sure if it just looks more intense because they are bigger and make more noise and do more damage, and splash more water..

It is also just coming into spring for us, the weather is just starting to get warmish,40s, could the weather change play a role as well?? I know when winter got here they started acting funny for a little while, they were really spookish then, so this is different..

Thanks Dawn me too!!! Its funny how these silly little fish can flip your world upside down in a heartbeat with their crazy antics!!!
I know!!! My Oscar Big Boy does crazy stuff all the time!!! LOL!!! They are a lot of fun!!!

Yeah, Malawi cichlids tend to do some chasing, circling, tail slapping, etc., and it's typically the male chasing the female around. Some new worlds look more like fighting than mating. It's not just a male chasing a female around because he wants to spawn, it's more like a test of strength between the pair. Ime some go through it the first time then they're good, others seem to fuss with each other off and on throughout-- like some marriages lol.

I had guianacara for a few years. First time some of them paired up it was suddenly like gang warfare for about 30 minutes, they went totally berserk, then they settled into two pairs and that was the end of it. If I hadn't had plenty of breeding experience before then I'd have thought they'd lost their minds in a homicidal rage. :)

Lol!!!!!! Yes, absolutely.. thank you for the advice and help, my 55 is up and running, just monitoring the situation for now, if need be, I'll plop someone in there, hopefully it will work itself out, things have already calmed down slightly, but who knows for how long. MFK is by far the best site for help and Info, thank you all!!!

I don't want to get in an argument about tank size. Does look small. Dither fish can help if tank size appropriate (I'll leave it at that).
This is typ. dominance/ pecking order stuff. With 2 of same type of fish= common.

I literally just had to separate my blonde and tiger longfin Oscars lol! 2mo straight of battles...dither fish added and all! Keep us updated!

I get it about the tank size, a new one is being built, I have already said that
Not you I have been dinged before. Dithers help. You're oscars are still growing up. If they get into massive lip locking you are probably looking at a problem. If it's off and on keep an eye on them, move stuff etc. Just advice not preaching.
