HELP...My pacu's skin is peeling off

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
i would say he has a very serious fungus problem.... maybe initiated from the pleco..and could be additional bacterial infection.. try fungus med..and keep your water pristene condition....... i have never seen such a large area of fish scales destroyed... i think you need to act fast... good luck.

I've tried fungus med for 3 days already but it seems it isn't helping. I've never seen anything like this before as well and i can't find anything like this on the internet as well. And both the right side and the left side of then pacu's body are affected.

I would move the other pleco as well. If it is them sucking on him that's causing it the other one might be doing it at night.

Could your pleco that's in there now still be sucking on the pacu? My oscar had the same thing about the size of a half dollar I used salt daily water changes and I can't remember Melafix or pimafix but it seemed to clear up in a week

Is the pacu still eating?

Oh I also cut the lights way down to about an hour a day just long enough for a wc food and treatment it seemed to calm him down and the other fish in the tank so he wasn't so stressed

I don't believe that this pleco sucks on the pacu because my pleco and oscars had been living together for 3 years already i think, and that other pleco always had problems with sucking on fish from when he was little and he was alone in his tank for around 8 years so i wanted to see if after 8 years he became normal but i was wrong doing that :/ I will move the pacu alone to his 50 gal , no he hasn't been eating from when i moved him to the 70 gal.

Hi all! Whatever happened to your pacu? Mine is doing this. It was kinda getting bothered by a blackbelt cichlid so I moved it to another tank and added melafix for two days now. Today the skin on both sides of its stomach is hanging off? Is it possible it is from being over fed? Mine had been eating a lot since I was trying to get food past it to other fish and its belly was quite full at times. Any info would be great. Thanks!

He hasn't logged in over a year doubt he'll chime in. Fish is probably dead

This is my update on my pacus situation on this old thread. The pacu I'm talking about is young and only 5 inches and skin was falling off. My pacu was moved to another tank treated with a bit of salt and melafix for 6 days now. The pacu's skin fell off from both sides of it's stomach leaving patch on each side through which you could see its flesh. It did not eat for about 4 days. It is now eating once again and swimming freely. Skin is still in the process of regrowing on both side and looks quite black. It appears this fish is well on the mend and will survive this, what I though to be un-survivable, experience. I still do not know what caused this but I hope to never see it again on this fish or any others! I hope this info helps someone else down the road.
