HELP My Rays!

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Large hybrid is now starting to get lines on her disc. Will someone please answer. How to treat her? Need meds of some sort now! I did as I was told and did my clean wc's and watched 7 die. Now please tell me what else can i do?!?!xxx

No firm ideas at this point. So so sorry. I truly feel for you and know it's a horrible thing your going through. Anything I say would be a guess. My question would be guess external internal. Or is the damage done and not much to do. I keep salt and pimafix if you have something you better just go for it. Wish I could help more my friend. Text me anytime. Sorry I didn't think about messaging you sooner.

I'm really sorry to hear about your losses and I commend you for your efforts. Have you heard anything back from sending the rays to the college? Seachem prime can be dosed up to 5x strength safely and it nullifies ammonia, and nitrites, but it also eliminates heavy metals in the water. This sounds like a type of chemical issue with your water... I hope your hybrid pulls through and your pups survive. I would be devistated :(

sorry to hear of your losses.
only just read through the thread and there is some great info . it sounds like the water problems whatever they were have resulted with the filter not working properly and then the treatments after to try help the fish can also cause the filter harm.

it sounds like its too late to help now but i wish you good luck all the same.
as others have said find a clean source of water be it self filtered or bottled as suggested or from a friends or something (DB kindly offered help).
stop feeding stop treating unless you know what it is that your treating for and try slowly flush the tank with clean water then add something to boost the filter perhaps biomedia from another tank to the sump/filter.

thats what i would do. i would probably add salt too but thats all.

at least you got the pups out so there is something positive for you and i hope the one still with you makes it.

good luck !

Man, what a horrible story. Really sorry for your losses to date. Must be a nightmare watching your pride and joys suffer and not being able to help them. I hope you manage to sort something out with your water supply for the future and hope you never have to go through this again. Best of luck with the pups. Like yargnits said, at least you got something positive to llok forward to and keep you going.

I would guess your water supply was contaminated after the pipes were worked on. Waterchanges were prob the worst thing to do. I would go buy bottled water or find someone on a different water supply and load up. Rays can usually hold up fairly well to high nitrates, that would have been the least of my worries.

Very sorry to hear hope you can keep the last one going

Very sorry to hear

Outside of fresh clean water, unfortunately there isn't much that one can do when their fish are exposed to a toxin, in this case perhaps more than one toxin. (from water main break/repair)

Seachem prime can be dosed up to 5x strength safely and it nullifies ammonia, and nitrites, but it also eliminates heavy metals in the water

Just so there is no confusion, Seachem Prime does not eliminate anything beyond 'trace' amounts of heavy metals. As in those that are typically found in municipal drinking water supplies. It will not eliminate a large spike in lead, copper, or any other heavy metal.

Back in 2004 Seachem actually removed the spiel about detoxifying heavy metals from the Prime labels, and when I questioned Dr. Greg Morin, Ph.D., President/CEO of Seachem Laboratories, Inc. about this - his response (in part) is below.

We did remove from our labeling as it is a fairly minor effect and did not want to mislead people into thinking it was some kind of heavy metal removing product... but maybe removal of that has caused more confusion since competitors still make the claim for an effect that is identical in their products as well.

I just didn't want anyone thinking that Prime/Safe etc are some kind of heavy metal removing product, they aren't.

I always have a few Polyfilters ready to use in situations like this. they remove a wide range of pollutants. If i ever notice even the slightest behaviour change after a water change (even though i use an HMA filter on the mains) i put some of these in my filter. http://www.polybiomarine.com/

I'm loaded to the gills with rays here, fairly new pups, more on the way. I'm wayyy out of room, BUT I can take a few rays. I've got some empty tubs, good water, an RO system here, enough bio to start up a new system and a cabinet full of meds in the event they appear to have something.

I'm 2 hours north. IF you want to bring them I'll be more then happy to give it a go. I have no problem putting up a 150 gallon tub and running as much new water through it as you'd like. Going to be another 20k+ gallon month so another few thousand is just a drop in the bucket...... I'll just need to figure out where to come up with another decent UV as my spare is on a QTing ray I picked up last weekend.
