HELP!!! my sting ray was attacked

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
If I were you Id remove the Gar and pleco those would make the most sense how would the rtc do tht they don't have teeth they just suck in there food maybe it it was a lot bigger but good luck in the rays recovery

Have you ever been bitten by a large catfish. Their mouths are like 60 grit sand paper. I have seen mens skin shredded off their hands/arms from hand fishing. If a large cat can do that to a human imagine a smaller one with a small ray its mouth. Could just as easily been the pleco
also. I have even heard of large knife fish being aggro towards tankmates causing damage.

Sorry to hear it didn't make it.

Nope never been bit but I don't see how the catfish could of done that damage like the shape of the injury to me wouldn't add up to it being the catfish it looks like the Gar grabbed the front of his disk and tried to rip him to shreds but that's just how I see it.

Sorry for your loss don't give up fix your mistakes and try again good luck

I think the culprit was the pleco, the hole on the motoro was almost completely round, and they would be the only explanation to me, but sorry for your loss

I guess it's as they say lesson learned. Sorry you had to learn it this way. I am by no means a super experienced ray keeper, but I would say to read all the stickies there is so much information in them that is so beneficial for you. What size tank are they in? It looked to me that the size tank with the tank mates you have in there that you are pretty over stocked and that can't help with trying to keep super clean water for the rays. Glad you decided to move a few of the tank inhabitants out it was just begging for disaster, if it were my tank personally I would have pulled the gar, pleco, and RTC, I also don't like the rock piles, they look cool but you have to totally dismantle them to clean all of the fish poo out and they could collapse and kill the fish that are hiding in them. That is of course just my 2 cents.

Sorry for your loss.
I think the biggest reason some of the guys were (as you call it, but not how I see it) was being rude is, if you had done your research, you would have know before you added the rays into that tank that a Placo is a No No and the red cat could be a problem also.
Yes this is a place to learn and help one another. But we also see so many people out there due stupid things when it comes to rays. (not saying you) Research on nay fish in important, esp when its rays and saltwater fish.
Again, sorry for your loss. Sad to see one not make it. But its a learning lesson as well.

Dont give up.. Rays are worth it.. :)

thanks for all of your info my tank is a 120 gallon tall 5 ft long he was small so my lfs said he would be good for a little while yet i plan on building a bigger tank to house all of my big fish i never knew about the stickies but i did do research online everyone said it would be alright i would just have to keep on eye on it my pleco never went near him i was told that not all plecos feed off of rays not saying he didn't but it's hard to tell from the injuries i saved the body to have a close look to try and figure out what injured it...i just think if the pleco did do it why isn't my teacup ray hurt?

Just cause nobody has went after the "teacup" yet doesn't mean that it won't happen. Why do you refer to it as a "teacup" do you not know what kind of ray it is? ANd trust me just because your LFS says you will "be fine" doesn't mean thats true at all......what it means is they want to sell you something, sad but true. There are some LFS"S out there that are better than others don't get me wrong but in the long run they are all in it to make money and keep their doors open.
