HELP!! My water parameters are whacked!!

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
So basically its the sponge sleeve on the canister full of carbon, not the carbon, doing all the biological stuff. Good to know.
I'm going to find something to add to my filter media. I'm gonna use half carbon, half the new stuff.
Good thread boys, I learned a lot!

Would Hydor Ceramic Cylinders be something I could add to get the bio-filter rocking? I saw some online...
gonna break out the test kit and see where my levels are.

yeah i would think they would work
i am not real familar with them though
i myself would stuff the canister full of pot scrubbers and ditch the carbon all together

On my 72gallon planted bowfront I run 1 magnum 350, which is similar to your HOT magnums. In the container that is suposed to hold the carbon, I have filled it with Eheim brand "Ehfisubstrat" which is very good for culturing bacteria colonies. The blue sleeve outside of it, is mainly for trapping particles and waste and should be rinsed or changed monthly. There are other brands that you could use also, basicly you are looking for a porous ceramic or sintered glass material. Don't use any other media in the Hot magnums and when you clean the media just rinse with aquarium water. This will give you the most out of your HOT magnums.

With the whispers continue to use these and the carbon here(this will be more than enough carbon for your tanks). Do your whispers have a spong type material in front of the filter bags? This is your biological media, if yours are older you can stuff the front part of the whisper filter with plastic pot scrubbies this will give you more area to grow bacteria and make your whispers more efficent. Also when cleaning the pot scrubbies just rinse with aquarium water.

Remember chlorine will kill the benefical bacteria. Once you get your tanks back to the cycled stage and have some good bacteria colonies going, You could use your python to refill the tanks, just unplug the filters first that way no untreated water goes through them. Still there is no way to protect your fish from the untreated water though. If you do go with this method I would keep the changes to 25% and add the Prime(water conditioner as soon as you can).

By the way if you can keep the the ammonia down to .25ppm your fish will be fine.

OK, today I went out and got some new filter media. I bought some Matrix by Seachem on the suggestion of the LFS guy and some of those ceramic rings made by Fluval. I filled the magnum on my 55 with the Matrix, ceramic rings and some of the cotton looking filter stuff. I did the same on the 52gal except I left some of the carbon in it, as this is the only filter on this tank. I put the ceramic rings behind the bags on all my Whisper filters. We'll see what happens.

DIE AMMONIA!! DIE NITRATE!!
I'm usually a peaceful person:)

Matrix is great media but it is going to take some time to build up the bacteria colonies. You will probably have to do some water changes in the mean time.

I did something kind of odd when I started my 75 gallon, I attempted to seed the new emperor filter in there by stuffing the media tray with rocks from my old established tank, as well I took some "filters bags/socks" and stuffed them full of rocks from my old tank and threw them in the new tank for a while... seemed like my fish did fine almost right away in there...
